In 1874 Ferdinand de Rothschild bought a large plot of hillside from the Duke of Marlbourough and created in the English countryside a French Renaissance chateau, furnished in the style of Louise XIV.  Waddesdon has one of the finest collections of art and furniture in England.  Ferdinand de Rothschild used a French architect and intended the house to be a 'coup de theatre'.  Visitors today burst onto a plateau with a view across an Italian garden to a fantasy of mansard roofs, dormers, chimneys, turrets and pinnacles.  It is undoubtedly a coup, the word being appropriately French.

Booking opens on 18 January 2017.
